Terms of Use

1. General Terms of Use

The Ministry of Culture (YPPO) operates a number of digital platforms within the scope of its responsibilities. Through this website, the Ministry offers free information and communication services, as well as related digital applications, to all visitors and users (YPPO), under the terms of use set out below. This website (cyclades.culture.gov.gr) is operated by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades, a Regional Service of the Ministry.

By visiting, browsing or otherwise using this website, you accept these terms of use fully and without reservation. Please read them carefully before using the website. They apply to all of its content, including — but not limited to — files, texts, images, photographs, drawings, graphics, videos and software applications.

If you do not agree with these terms, please do not use the website or its services. The Ministry may update these terms at any time, so please check this page periodically. Continued use of the website after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

These terms of use, together with those of the Ministry’s other digital platforms, constitute the entire agreement between the Ministry and you, and are binding only on the two parties. No modification of these terms forms part of this agreement unless it is made in writing and incorporated into them. Unless otherwise stated, these terms take effect immediately and in full.

You must use this website in accordance with the law and with these terms. The website may be used only for lawful purposes, in a way that does not restrict or hinder its use by others. You must not take any action, or fail to take any action, that could damage the website, disrupt its operation, or compromise the services it provides to the public.

2. Intellectual Property

All content on this website — including, without limitation, documents, texts, files, news items, graphics, images, photographs, diagrams, illustrations, videos, sketches, software applications and the services provided — is the intellectual property of the Ministry. It is governed by Greek law, European Union law and the relevant international treaties, by national and international intellectual property legislation, and by Law 3028/2002 “On the Protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in general” (Government Gazette A΄ 153). Logos, names, trademarks and distinctive signs appearing on the website belong to cyclades.culture.gov.gr and/or to the parties identified on the website as holders of the relevant rights, and are protected under the applicable legislation on industrial and intellectual property and related rights (Law 2121/1993).

If any provision of these terms is found to conflict with the above legal framework, or otherwise ceases to be valid, it is automatically removed from these terms without affecting the validity of the remaining provisions.

The Ministry may publish, publicly display, reproduce, distribute, exploit and generally use the above content in any way and by any means — physical, electronic or digital — even where this is not expressly stated here. The Ministry may also, at its discretion and at any time, modify, edit, shorten, remove or rearrange the content posted on its website, in whole or in part (texts, images, videos, etc.).

This licence does not cover material identified as the intellectual or industrial property of third parties and protected by Law 2121/1993 or other relevant legislation. To use or exploit such material, you must contact the holders of the relevant rights and obtain the necessary licences.

Third-party works protected by intellectual property or related rights that appear on cyclades.culture.gov.gr have been included in good faith and for information purposes only, and will of course be removed at the request of the rights holders. The following are not considered third parties: employees of the Ministry (of any type of employment or specialty), of its Regional and Special Regional Services and of the Public Museums; providers of digital photography, filming or cataloguing services relating to monuments, sites, events, concerts and similar activities of the Ministry; and, in general, anyone who has assigned or transferred in writing, in accordance with intellectual property law, their rights over material posted on cyclades.culture.gov.gr.

3. Licence of Use

Any use, reproduction, republication, copying, storage, sale, transmission, distribution, publication, performance, downloading, translation or modification of the content of cyclades.culture.gov.gr or of its services, in whole or in part, without prior permission, is expressly prohibited.

By way of exception, you may store, copy, reproduce, republish, transmit or distribute individual parts of the content on a personal computer, strictly for personal use, provided that the use has no commercial, advertising or other exploitative purpose, direct or indirect, and that the source is always cited. This does not in any way transfer the intellectual property rights of the Greek State (Ministry of Culture). Accordingly, the content of cyclades.culture.gov.gr may not, in whole or in part, be sold, assigned, advertised, distributed, modified or downloaded in any other way.

Other products or services mentioned on this website that bear the trademarks of other organisations, companies, partners, bodies, associations or publications remain the intellectual and industrial property of those parties, who bear sole responsibility for them.

Regarding the use, reproduction and public dissemination — for direct or indirect financial or commercial purposes — of images of monuments, archaeological sites and historical places protected by Law 3028/2002 “On the Protection of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in general” (Government Gazette A΄ 153), please note that Article 46(7) of Law 3028/2002 applies, together with Joint Ministerial Decision no. ΥΠΠΟ/ΓΔΑΠΚ/ΔΜΕΕΠ/Γ2/Φ51-52-54/81397/2199/12-9-2005 (Government Gazette B΄ 1491) on the determination of photography, filming and video-recording fees, as amended and in force. This decision sets out the licensing procedure, the applicable fees and the manner of their collection, including the licensing of images of archaeological content for commercial or advertising use in online publications, e-books, audiovisual productions and electronic guides. The Greek State (Ministry of Culture) is the exclusive holder of the rights over such images and the exclusive beneficiary of any revenue arising from the depiction of a monument (movable or immovable) and its use in any form.

In addition, Law 4305/2014 (Government Gazette A΄ 237/31-10-2014) establishes a special exemption of cultural heritage material from further commercial or advertising use, in order to protect cultural heritage from theft, looting, vandalism, illegal excavation and illicit trafficking of antiquities, and generally to prevent movable and immovable monuments and sites protected under Law 3028/2002 from being exposed to risk.

4. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

The Ministry, and any parties identified on the website as holders of the relevant rights, make every effort to ensure that the content and information published on the website are accurate, clear, correct, complete, up to date and available. However, the Ministry is not liable for any spelling or other errors that may occur when such information is republished.

Contact forms, notice boards and interactive areas may be made available through this website. If you use them, you bear sole responsibility for the content of your communication and for any consequences of its publication. The Ministry accepts no responsibility for the accuracy or reliability of material published in interactive areas, for the consequences of communication within them, or for any consequences of using the website. Under no circumstances can the Ministry be considered to endorse the ideas, views or actions expressed by users through such communication. The Ministry may review, correct or delete user communications.

By submitting content through the contact forms, notice boards or interactive areas described above, you grant the Ministry, as operator of the website, a licence to use any resulting works that qualify for protection under Law 2121/1993.

The Ministry gives no guarantee — and accepts no liability, including for negligence — for any claims of a legal, civil or criminal nature, or for any damage of any kind (direct, special or consequential, including, indicatively, loss of profits, loss of data or other financial loss) suffered by you or by third parties in connection with the operation or non-operation of the website, its use, any failure to provide the services or information available through it, or any unauthorised third-party interference with the products, services or information it provides. The content of the website (files, texts, images, photographs, drawings, graphics, videos, software, information, names, depictions, data, etc.) and its services are provided “AS IS”, without any warranty of any kind, express or implied — including implied warranties of satisfactory quality, fitness for purpose, non-infringement, compatibility, security and accuracy — all of which are expressly disclaimed.

The Ministry makes every effort to keep the website running properly, but cannot guarantee that the website or its servers will operate without interruption or error, that any faults will be corrected, or that the website — or any other site or server through which its content is transmitted — will be free of viruses or other harmful components.

5. Protection against Malicious Software (“Viruses”)

The Ministry makes every effort to check the material uploaded to this website and to protect its servers, and the servers hosting the website, against malicious software (viruses).

Given the nature and structure of the Internet, however, the Ministry cannot be held liable, under any circumstances, for any damage, loss, alteration or destruction of your data, software or hardware that may occur during or after your use of this website, its pages, services or content. Nor can it guarantee that any related website, or the servers through which its services are made available, are free of viruses or other malicious software.

In any case, you are advised to use antivirus and anti-malware software whenever you connect to the Internet.

6. No Advice or Encouragement

Nothing in the content provided to users of this website constitutes, or may in any way be interpreted as, direct or indirect encouragement, instruction, advice or incitement to take or refrain from any action. It is for you to assess the content and act according to your own judgement; any liability on the Ministry’s part is excluded.

7. Links to Third-Party Websites

This website may contain links to third-party websites, provided solely for your information and convenience. Such links do not imply that the Ministry adopts, approves or accepts the views, actions or content of those websites, which are subject to their own terms of use. The Ministry does not control — and cannot verify — the availability, content, privacy policy, quality, completeness or updating of external websites and pages linked to via hyperlinks or banners.

The Ministry bears no responsibility for the content of such websites or for any damage arising from their use; you access them at your own risk. Sole responsibility for their content, and for any damage that may result from their use, lies with the third parties operating them, as provided by law. By visiting a third-party website, you leave cyclades.culture.gov.gr and become subject to that website’s terms of use.

8. Hyperlinks to this Website

The Ministry encourages the creation of hyperlinks to cyclades.culture.gov.gr; no permission is required. However, pages of this website may not be loaded within frames of other websites. Any page of this website reached via an external hyperlink must load in its own window.

9. Rights of Use of User Content

Content that you submit and publish remains your property. At the same time, you grant the website an unrestricted, royalty-free licence to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, publicly display and exploit that content, at any time and in any form, electronic or printed, provided your moral rights are not infringed. Any further use of content posted on cyclades.culture.gov.gr is always subject to the legislation on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data (Law 2472/1997, Government Gazette A΄ 50, and Law 3471/2006, Government Gazette A΄ 133), as in force.

10. User Data

Through this website, the Ministry may collect personal data and details of users, either submitted by the users themselves or gathered in the course of their browsing. Personal data are considered to be details that can be used solely to identify or contact users — in particular those collected through the website’s data submission forms. They are subject to the legal framework on personal data privacy, specifically Law 2472/1997 (as amended by Law 3625/2007) and Law 3471/2006 on the protection of personal data, and are used only for the purpose for which they were submitted. By providing your personal details on cyclades.culture.gov.gr, where required or requested, you expressly and unreservedly consent to their use.

The Ministry may use personal details for information purposes, or to send registered users emails or announcements and news, unless the user objects and expressly says so in their communication with the Ministry.

The Ministry does not sell the personal details of users or third parties, and does not transfer or disclose users’ personal details to third parties, unless required by law or where this is a contractual obligation necessary for the proper functioning of the website.

The Ministry may process some or all of the details submitted by users for statistical purposes and to improve its services and information. You may contact the administrator of cyclades.culture.gov.gr to confirm whether a personal file concerning you exists, and to request its correction, amendment or deletion.

Non-personal identification data may also be collected through cyclades.culture.gov.gr using technologies such as cookies and/or IP address tracking, as generated by the communication between your web browser and the server. Cookies are small text files stored on your device’s hard drive; they do not access any document or file on your computer, nor do they link your computer to any specific person. They are used to make it easier for you to access particular services and pages of the website, for statistical purposes, and to identify which areas of the website are useful or popular.

Non-personal data may also include the type of web browser you use, the type of computer, its operating system, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and other similar information.

You can configure your web browser either to warn you when cookies are used by specific services, or to reject cookies altogether.

If you choose not to allow the use of cookies, you may have limited access to some of the services, features or functions of this website. All data falling within the category of personal data that the Ministry receives through this website — whether submitted by users or collected in the course of browsing and using the website — are collected in accordance with Law 2472/1997 and Law 3471/2006 on the protection of personal data, as in force.

The Ministry is not responsible for the privacy policies of third-party websites that you access via hyperlinks from this website.

11. Modification of Content and Services

These terms and conditions of use, and any modification of them, are governed and supplemented by national law, European Union law and the relevant international treaties. They constitute the entire agreement between the Ministry and you, and are binding on both. The Ministry unilaterally reserves the right to modify, add to or change the content or services of its website, as well as these terms of use, whenever it deems necessary and without prior notice, through this website, always in accordance with the applicable legislative and regulatory framework. Any dispute shall be resolved by the courts of Athens, and Greek law shall apply.
