The Ephorate

The Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades is a Regional Service of the Ministry of Culture, at the level of a Directorate, with its headquarters in Athens and with territorial jurisdiction over the regional units: Andros, Melos, Thera, Kea-Kythnos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Syros and Tenos. The Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades is responsible for managing the cultural heritage of the Cycladic Archipelago, a task governed by the particularities and special difficulties posed by the fact that the distribution of monuments and museum infrastructures is scattered across dozens of islands.

The responsibilities of the Ephorate cover all matters relating to the conservation, protection and safeguarding of antiquities, scientific research, the discovery, preservation, conservation, presentation of antiquities, and their exhibition in Museums. It also embraces the study, planning, management and execution of any archaeological work for the conservation, repair, restoration, restoration, presentation and development of monuments and archaeological sites, as well as their surroundings (in nature, or not). All the above works must be executed with due diligence and reporting of the scientific study and publication of antiquities, the management of the monuments of archaeological sites, Museums and Collections, in its area of responsibility, and which belong to the state. In addition, it has the duty of the general care for the implementation of the applicable legislation on the protection of antiquities.

Its staff participates in all this work, as well as in the conduct of systematic and rescue excavations or other archaeological projects and research, in the study and organization of permanent and temporary exhibitions, in the development and operation of archaeological sites, in the organization, promotion and operation of museums, depending on the needs of the service and in whatever way they may be allotted to the individual departments.
