About the Ephorate

The Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades is a Regional Service of the Ministry of Culture, operating at Directorate level, with its headquarters in Athens and territorial jurisdiction over the regional units of Andros, Melos, Thera, Kea-Kythnos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Syros and Tenos.

The Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades is responsible for the management of the cultural heritage of the Cycladic Archipelago, a task shaped by the particular conditions and challenges arising from the geographical distribution of monuments and museum infrastructure across dozens of islands.

The responsibilities of the Ephorate encompass all matters relating to the protection and safeguarding of antiquities, archaeological and scientific research, and the discovery, preservation, conservation, presentation and exhibition of antiquities. They also include the study, planning, management and implementation of archaeological works concerning the conservation, repair, restoration, presentation and enhancement of monuments, archaeological sites and their surroundings.

The Ephorate is also responsible for the scientific documentation, study and publication of antiquities, as well as for the management of state-owned monuments, archaeological sites, museums and collections within its area of jurisdiction. In addition, it oversees the implementation of the legislation in force concerning the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage.

The staff of the Ephorate participates in all aspects of this work, including systematic and rescue excavations, archaeological projects and research, the study and organization of permanent and temporary exhibitions, the enhancement and operation of archaeological sites, and the organization, promotion and operation of museums. Staff members contribute to these activities according to the needs of the Service and the responsibilities assigned to the individual departments.
