Ο Colin Renfrew, καθηγητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Cambridge, διεθνώς καταξιωμένος αρχαιολόγος, με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για την ελληνική προϊστορία και μεγάλη αγάπη για την Ελλάδα, έφυγε από κοντά μας στο Cambridge στις 24 Νοεμβρίου 2024. O Renfrew, που ήταν πρώην Πρόεδρος της Βρετανικής Σχολής Αθηνών, Επίτιμος Εταίρος της Εν Αθήναις Αρχαιολογικής Εταιρείας και διατηρούσε στενή σχέση με την Εφορεία Αρχαιοτήτων Κυκλάδων του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού, επισκέφθηκε για πρώτη φορά την Ελλάδα το 1963 και εκπόνησε τη διδακτορική του διατριβή με επίκεντρο την Κυκλαδική προϊστορία⸱ στη συνέχεια ανέσκαψε στο Σάλιαγκο Αντιπάρου, στους Σιταγρούς, στη Φυλακωπή της Μήλου, στη Μαρκιανή της Αμοργού και στην Κέρο κληροδοτώντας μας υποδειγματικές δημοσιεύσεις των ανασκαφών του. Το εμβληματικό του έργο «The Emergence of Civilisation» που εκδόθηκε το 1972, άσκησε καθοριστική επιρροή στην έρευνα της προϊστορίας του Αιγαίου, ενώ οι πολυάριθμες άλλες, υψηλού επιπέδου, μελέτες του εδραίωσαν τη θέση του στο πάνθεον των κορυφαίων μορφών της ελληνικής και διεθνούς αρχαιολογίας. Ο Colin Renfrew διακρίθηκε, επίσης, για τον ενεργό του αγώνα κατά της διεθνούς αρχαιοκαπηλίας, ιδρύοντας στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Cambridge το Ινστιτούτο για την Παράνομη Διακίνηση Αρχαιοτήτων (Illicit Antiquities Research Centre) και δείχνοντας ιδιαίτερη ευαισθησία για τις απορφανισμένες Πρωτοκυκλαδικές αρχαιότητες που αποτελούσαν και κύριο αντικείμενο του επιστημονικού του ενδιαφέροντος.
Σας προσκαλούμε να τιμήσουμε μαζί τη μνήμη του και να αναλογιστούμε τη σημαντική προσφορά του στην Ελλάδα, τον ελληνικό πολιτισμό και την ελληνική αρχαιολογία, καθώς και την ανεκτίμητη συμβολή του στην προώθηση της μελέτης του Πρωτοκυκλαδικού πολιτισμού.

Remembering Colin Renfrew: a life’s work in the Cyclades and beyond

Colin Renfrew, professor at the University of Cambridge, famed internationally as an archaeologist with a special interest in Greek prehistory and a profound affection for Greece, died in Cambridge on 24 November 2024. A former Chair of the British School at Athens and an Honorary Member of the Archaeological Society of Athens, he was also closely associated with the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Renfrew first came to Greece in 1963, wrote his PhD on Cycladic prehistory, and went on to excavate at Saliagos (Antiparos), Sitagroi (Macedonia), Phylakopi (Melos), Markiani (Amorgos), and Keros, leaving us exemplary publications of his excavations. His 1972 volume The Emergence of Civilisation revolutionised Aegean prehistory, and his many other high-calibre publications cement his place in the pantheon of archaeologists of Greece and the world. Moreover, Colin Renfrew was distinguished for his active stand against the international illicit trade in antiquities, founding at the University of Cambridge the Illicit Antiquities Research Centre, and showing particular sensitivity towards the orphaned Early Cycladic antiquities that formed a principal focus of his scholarly work.
