The project – ‘FIXING AND PARTIAL RESTORATION OF AN ANCIENT TOWER IN AGIOS PETROS, ANDROS’ – implemented by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades is part of the Sectional Development Program of the Ministry of Culture ‘CULTURAL HERITAGE 2021-2025’ and has a budget of €450,000.00
The aim is to overhaul the ancient tower in Ag. Petros, Andros and see to its partial restoration, as the monument has suffered significant damage both due to the collapse of building materials and due to erosion. Its condition is considered precarious.
The monument is one of the best preserved ancient towers in the Cyclades. It has a circular plan, a maximum diameter of 9.5 m, and a surviving height of approximately 20 m. It is dated, based on the information available so far, to the 3rd century BC.
For the needs of the project, a ‘Study of architectural mapping of the monument and topographic mapping of the immediate surrounding area’ as well as a ‘Study of support scaffolding at the application level’ have been prepared, based on which the rescue work on the monument is being implemented.
The execution of the project will begin in April 2023 and end in December 2025.
