The installation of special metal scaffolding, as well as the shoring and bracing of the distorted areas of the masonry of the ancient tower of Agios Petros in Andros, is in full swing, thus preventing the risk of collapse of the important monument. The scaffolding will operate on multiple levels, as it ensures the temporary fixation of dangerous sections, allows safe access for the preparation of the necessary studies and constitutes the infrastructure for future restoration work.
The project ‘Consolidation and partial restoration of an ancient tower in Agios Petros, Andros’ is part of the National Development Program ‘TPA MINISTRY OF CULTURE A. CULTURAL HERITAGE 2021-2025’, in the Priority Axis ‘Protection, development and promotion of cultural heritage’. It has been accepted by the Ministry of Culture with a total budget of 450,000 euros. The works included in the project are implemented independently by the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades.
Between 2023 to now, the Ephorate has already completed a significant range of preparatory and rescue works: earth-moving and excavation cleaning were carried out inside and outside the monument, as were the retrieval, documentation and classification of ancient building materials from the ground floor and the first floor, detailed mapping of the tower as well as the study of the scaffolding.
With the completion of the installation of the scaffolding and the immediate consolidation works, the preparation of studies for the complete restoration and promotion of the ancient tower and its surrounding area will be launched, with the aim of returning this unique monument to the public domain.
