‘The Island of Museums ‘of Kastro, Chora on Naxos – Phase II’
The physical aspect of the action, that began to be implemented in the previous programming period (ESPA 2014-2020), concerns the conversion of the Kastro at Chora on Naxos (built in 1207) into an open-plan museum. All the important remains of the medieval complex (Archaeological Museum building, Glezos or Crispi Tower, and the Air Force building) will be appropriately marked and will be linked in concept and physically with information signs, route markings and the creation of a relevant digital tour application for smart devices. The three museum shells are the main points of the open-plan museum. In the three medieval buildings and in their immediate surroundings, works will be carried out to consolidate, restore and upgrade their infrastructure. Finally, a single permanent exhibition is being organized for them from scratch: it will have the character of a Themed Museum concerning the culture of Naxos and the Lesser Cyclades over time.
Phase II of the Project includes the following:
(a) Archaeological Museum of Naxos: Development of the southern courtyard of the Archaeological Museum (landscaping, demolitions, clearing of vegetation, ground levelling, transportation of building materials, etc.), construction in the southern courtyard of the Archaeological Museum (stairs, parapets, walls, etc.), removal of internal and external coatings (in part), static reinforcements, grouting, additions, reconstructions, crack filling, jointing, coatings, external and internal painting, construction of internal partitions, maintenance-reconstruction of wooden floors and such, the repair and replacement of the load-bearing structure of floors, maintenance of marble floors, development of floor sub-bases, installation of covers in the outdoor areas.
(b) Glezos Tower: Grouting (part), maintenance of wooden ceilings, flooring, construction of reinforced concrete slabs, internal coatings (part), painting, construction of sanitary facilities, construction in the courtyards of Glezos Tower, construction of internal partitions, balcony waterproofing.
(c) Air Force Building: Replacement-maintenance of wooden floors, application of new external coatings (part), painting, configuration of basements and ground floor floors (part). Additionally included: Photogrammetric documentation of the buildings of the Island, geotechnical study for the Archaeological Museum building, static study of the Archaeological Museum and Glezos Tower, exhibition lighting study, documentation work, supervision of installation and electrical work, maintenance of objects (part), configuration and equipment of other areas (ticket offices, shops, refreshment bar), facilities for access for people with mobility problems (wheelchair lifts for the stairs of the archaeological museum), photography, production of supervisory material, publication of a Guide, public information brochures and in Braille, production of information signs for the buildings of the island and signage in the Kastro area, digital tour application for smart devices, creation of a website and documentary, construction site organization.
The Action is planned to be implemented through the following subprojects:
SUBPROJECT 1 ‘Maintenance, repair, improvement of infrastructure and restoration of the monumental shells of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos – Creation of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
SUBPROJECT (2) ‘Supply and installation of Museum showcases on the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’ .
SUBPROJECT (3) ‘Supply and installation of electrical and plumbing equipment in the buildings of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
SUB-PROJECT (4) ‘Supply and installation of window frames in the buildings of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
SUB-PROJECT (5) ‘Supply of surface coating materials and their application in the building of the Archaeological Museum and in the interior of the Air Force building’.
SUB-PROJECT (6) ‘Supply and installation of metal beams of the Archaeological Museum’.
SUB-PROJECT (7) ‘Supply and installation of railings in the buildings of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
SUB-PROJECT (8) ‘Production of supervisory and informational material (updated signs, information leaflets, guide, Braille leaflets etc.) for the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
The SUB-PROJECT (9) ‘Supply of mobile refreshment equipment, shops and ticket offices for the buildings of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
The SUB-PROJECT (10) ‘Supply of coating materials, fillings and grouts for the buildings of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
The SUB-PROJECT (11) ‘Supply of floor covering materials for the buildings of Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
SUB-PROJECT (12) ‘Supply of cement mortar materials and its application to the buildings of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
SUB-PROJECT (13) ‘Supply and installation of wooden stairs in the buildings of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
SUB-PROJECT (14) ‘Supply of timber for the buildings of the Island of Museums, Kastro Chora on Naxos’.
