The change of year has brought a book that captures for the first time the great archaeological heritage of Antiparos: Monuments and antiquities of Antiparos and its islets. This is the proceedings of the archaeological conference organized by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades in collaboration with the Municipality of Antiparos, and held there in September 2018. The publication was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Antiparos and published by Melissa Publishing House.
The volume brings together 17 contributions from scholars who have dealt with the island and its history. Their desire was first to make both old and newer research carried out on Antiparos known to the wider public, and also to present new information useful even to the most demanding of experts.
The last part of the volume presents 99 photographs from the archive of the Ephorate of Cyclades that capture three very important historical and cultural aspects of Antiparos: Despotiko, the Medieval Castle (with shots from the 1970s) and the images of the post-Byzantine island.
The publication, the first collected presentation of research exclusively on Antiparos and its islets, constitutes a significant contribution to the understanding of the island’s history. It highlights aspects not illuminated until now that demonstrate the special importance and position of Antiparos in the Cyclades.
The publication is dedicated to two great figures of Cycladic archaeology who worked on Antiparos and its islets, the late F. Zapheiropoulou and A.C. Renfrew. Both had taken part in the 2018 Conference with talks that appear in this volume.
