The Lower Castle or Kato Kastro, located in Chora, was built during the reign of the first Latin ruler of Andros, Marinos Dandolos (1207-1238/43), to protect the area of Chora. It occupies the surface of a small islet and was fortified with towers. Its walls, rising vertically from the natural rock, follow the contours of the islet. In the centre of the enclosure on a rocky outcrop rises the half-ruined central tower, to the northeast stands the North-east Tower and to the north the ruins of a rectangular building, the so-called North-east House. The whole was connected to the main island, where the fortified medieval settlement was located, by a single-arched bridge.
