The church of the Taxiarchis in Mesaria belongs to the type of cruciform two-columned structure with a dome, a narthex on the west and two small propylaea, which are not preserved today. It was erected in 1158 during the reign of Emperor Manuel Komnenos by Constantine Monastiriotis and his wife Irene Prasini, according to a surviving founding inscription on the impost of the northern column.
It is built in the brick-enclosed isodomic masonry system, except for the lower parts, where fieldstones have been used. The fresco decoration of the church, recently restored by a team of conservators of the Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades, dates to the 12th century. The church underwent extensive repair work, both internally and externally, which was completed in 1775, based on an inscription on the lintel of the southern door. Within the framework of the 3rd Community Support Programme, restoration work was carried out on the church and the landscaping of its surroundings.
